Education  

1. Sth. be an arduous process  

 _(sth. is an exhausting thing to do)  

= sth. be a tiring process that requires agreat deal of effort.  

某事是一個需要付出艱苦努力的過程  

實例：Attendinga university with a top-tier reputation often is an arduous but rewarding process.  

考入一所通常是需要付出艱苦努力但回報也同樣豐厚的過程。  

2. form the basis of sth.  

= provide the ideas or actions from which sth. can develop  

為某事物打下基礎  

實例：Traditional ways of teaching form the basis of the lesson.  

傳統(tǒng)的教學方式構成授課的基礎。  

3. rely on linear thinking  

=depend on habits of thought in which oneidea follows directly from another one.  

依賴于直線型的思維；收到思維的局限  

實例：The students should not rely on linear thinking habits. Instead, they should think more innovatively..  

學生們不應收到現(xiàn)行思維慣性的束縛，而相反地，他們應該更多地去創(chuàng)造性思考。  

4. break the mould  

=change a situation by doing sth.  unprecedented.  

打破常規(guī)  

實例：He made anattempt to break the mould of British politics.

=how good or bad a student is academically  

學業(yè)表現(xiàn)  

實例：Tyler's academic performance has been disappointing.  

泰勒的學習表現(xiàn)十分令人失望。  

Day 2  

1. Academic qualifications  

= the degrees, diplomas and certificates that someone has acquired.  

學歷  

實例：Today academic qualifications are essential for getting a decent job.  

學歷在當今對找到一份體面的工作有著至關重要的作用。  

2. Rote memorization  

 _remember sth. mechanically  

=a learning technique that focuses on learning by repetition  

重復記憶，機械記憶  

實例：Rote memorizationis not entirely useless. It can help children to learn the basics such as the multiplication tables.  

死記硬背并非是一無是處的。它可以幫助孩子牢記住像乘法表這樣的基礎知識。  

3. Read extensively  

=read widely  

廣泛地閱讀  

實例：Some people argue that examinations do not motivate students to read extensively.

=students’ right to organise their ownactivities  

學生的自我管理  

實例：Students’autonomy should be encouraged when there are not enough teachers to go around.

1.academic attainment  

=Sth. that students succeed in doing in class  

學生在學業(yè)方面取得的成就  

實例:Japan has a significantly better record in terms of average mathematical attainment than England and Wales.  

日本學生在平均算數(shù)方面明顯高于英格蘭和威爾士的學生。  

2.anti-social behavior  

=behaviour that lacks consideration for others and may cause damage to society  

對他人和社會有負面影響的行為  

實例：Even though the great majority of students are well-behaved, there is a small minority that engage in anti-social behaviour.  

盡管絕大部分的學生都表現(xiàn)良好，但也有一小部分人表現(xiàn)出了反社會的行為。  

3.adolescence  

=the period of your life from in which you develop from being a child into being an adult  

青春期  

實例：Long-term relationships may not have the fireworks of adolescence, but are stronger for it, because of the wealth of shared experience.  

長期存在的關系也許并不像青少年時代的關系的關系那樣絢爛奪目，但卻更強烈，因為共同分享的經(jīng)歷是十分寶貴的。  

4.Indiscipline  

=a lack of control or obedience  

不遵守紀律或規(guī)定  

實例：The coach apologised for his team's indiscipline.  

教練就他的隊伍缺乏紀律的行為道了歉。  

5.the responsibility for sth. rests with sb.  

=someone’s duty is to do sth.  

某種責任應該由某人承擔  

實例：The responsibility for limiting children's access to violence on TV rests with the parents.  

家長應承擔讓孩子遠離電視中暴力行為的責任。
